Mapping and Africa

Our social studies and science focus for January and February is mapping and Africa. We have used google earth to see where our school is in Damariscotta. We also "traveled" all the way to Tanzania and Zanzibar to see the difference between and city and rural area. Students are excited and engaged in our study. Mr. O, our classroom Ed tech has a lot of experience in mapping and orienteering from his time at Unity college. He is using that expertise to teach our class about maps and compasses. Yesterday, students created a map and brought it home to share. We are looking forward to working more with Mr. O on Monday as he introduces a compass.

FARMS Community Kitchen Trip

We had a great trip to the FARMS Community Kitchen Yesterday! We made two great recipes,  a winter minestrone soup and Beet and Parsnip burgers. The kids had a great time peeling onions and garlic, peeling and cutting vegetables, measuring ingredients and taste testing kohlrabi and raw  spinach. Kohlrabi was a big hit! Everyone in our class tried it and most want to have it again. Kohlrabi is new to me as well. See if you can find this crazy, root vegetable next time you are at Hanford, Rising Tide or a Winters Farmer's Market! It looks like this...
The big green one with splits in it and the small purple one with slits in it.

Starting our Monday with a little Spanish enrichment!

Meet Maggie! She works for Kieve Leadership School and is spending the winter here at GSB working with students. She will be doing a variety of things during her time here. Every Monday morning she will be working with our class doing Spanish enrichment! We are excited that she is here. Today, we talked about where in the world they speak Spanish. We also started learning our colors.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!  It sounds like everyone had a wonderful holiday break! We are hard at work already! Students are jumping back in and are ready to work.

Here is our class working hard on handwriting.

Please remember to send your child with adequate clothing for their day. A warm jacket, snow pants, and extra hats and mittens are a must, everyday. I suggest layers for the classroom, as it tends to be cool.

Thanks!

Our class is on fire!

Check out these kiddos doing "read to self" during literacy! They are rockin' at reading!

This week has been amazing! Our class has worked hard. They have done a great job listening, following directions and completing their work. They have earned lots of stickers and are 30 stickers away from their next reward!

Have a great weekend everyone!
